Great Barrier Airlines was established in 1983. Great Barrier Airlines flew its first scheduled service to Great Barrier Island on the 2nd of December 1983, departing from Ardmore Airfield. Today they operate out of Auckland International, North Shore’s Dairy Flat, Whangarei, Whitianga, and Matarangi Airports.Great Barrier Airlines is certified to airline atandards under part 125.Their Flight Operations Certificate currently allows them to operate aircraft types up to 30 passenger seats.Great Barrier Airlines currently operates a fleet of 9 aircraft, with several more in the pipeline.Their aircraft are all professionally maintained by their engineering staff.

Great Barrier Airlines currently employs over 25 staff, including pilots, engineers, operations, and office staff.Britten Norman Islander and Trislander aircraft make up the bulk of the fleet, and are used mainly on out Great Barrier routes.They also make use of Piper Cherokee 6 when loads are a little lighter.Their Partenavia is used mainly for freight, and sometimes charter work.The other two aircraft in the fleet are again Piper aircraft, but this time the bigger PA-31 series, they operate both a Chieftain and a Navajo.These two get used mainly for charter, but can occasionally be seen on Great Barrier.
