The foundation on which the airline started out was a weak one with difficulties such as under-capitalization, inherited industrial problems, inadequate maintenance facilities, and poorly trained staff in some technical areas. However with the passage of time and the purchase of newer aircraft, many of the deficiencies were rectified along with improvements made in the organization itself. Despite the many improvements to the airline, it still faced financial difficulties and continues to do so today. Bahamasair, the National Flag Carrier of the Bahamas came about as a result of the discontinuation of service by British Airways in 1970 and Pan American Airlines in 1973 due to the fuel crisis.
Once formed, the airlines’ mission was to serve the Bahamas and its people. There were six objectives set out by Bahamasair that was deemed to be vital roles in the efficiency of its services. The Airline was to serve as the National Flag Carrier and promote the countries’ image at home as well as abroad. To provide efficient services throughout the Commonwealth in a cost effective manner. To provide a competitive scheduled passenger, charter and freight service to support commerce and promote the Bahamas Tourist Industry at a profit to the airline. To provide efficient high quality fixed base operations to facilitate and promote general aviation to and within the commonwealth at a profit to the airline.
